This is out of the blue, but discussion of LTSP brought it to mind.
If you want to remote boot a terminal but don't have a boot ROM for your
NIC (or don't feel like leaping through flaming hoops to program it) you
can use a floppy in place of a boot ROM.
Download the appropriate ROM image for your NIC and use DD to write it
to a floppy disk. Since a typical ROM image is about 32kb it loads very
quickly - for practical purposes it's no slower than loading it from ROM.
It's a Lame Hack, but one that works well. ;-)
