You need to completely unmount the drives on which you would like to
install to succeed in the installation.

Plop in a Knoppix CD, then follow the instructions on:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml

The Gentoo live CD does the same as a Knoppix, just gives you a kernel off
the CD, and points you to the current link to install instructions. The
only difference in the instructions is that, with Knoppix, you probably
already have a network working.

The instructions are very gentle, and take you through every step from
fdisk/parted to portage, all of it. I suppose you're doing this for the
first time, I'd advise doing a stage 1 install now, it SAVES time while
learning.
