Yes, and I do understand, though I wasn't the one questioning your need to
use XP. :-) My own poor wife has been stuck on Win 98 for years because I
refused to upgrade it. It was actually no problem, until she started taking
an online course, and the school makes you promise you'll have minimal
versions of MS software. (Win 98 was good enough, but Office 95 was not.)
The school has MS upgrades for cheap but I think that the Office upgrade they
have forces you to go to Win XP. (The earlier version - was it 2000? 2002?
will still work on Win 98.) Anyway, we got through the first course without
any upgrades; she was able to do a lot with Open Office, though she had to
use her computer at work to make sure that the docs she modified with OO were
still readable in MS Office. And occasionally there were files that would
make OO crash. :-(

Anyway, if I understand you correctly, you're encountering this error when
attempting to install XP, even you've cleaned off the drive? Of course,
Windows can be fussy about pre-existing installs and its version of fdisk is
exceedingly stupid. My inclination would be to get a second hard drive, and
put Linux on that, but as I haven't been reading this thread very faithfully,
I don't recall if the machine in question was a notebook or not.
