Of course all of the background you gave has absolutely nothing to do
with the consumer market unless Visual Studio has just recently become a
consumer item.

As to whether FOSS can beat Microsoft in the programming market - that
happens only when businesses demand to use FOSS.

As to whether FOSS can beat Microsoft in the consumer market - that may
never occur but I believe that it ultimately will. The fact that is that
it is already capable of handling most home users needs. It just isn't
as elegant, doesn't handle the variety of hardware quite as neatly and
doesn't have the fringe software that people think that they want - at
least not yet.

Back to the tools though - they are constantly getting better.
