WinSCP is really good at that. Also encrypts (ssh) not that encryption
is all that necessary on dial-up to the same machine.

Myself, I like roaming profiles but that is kind of tough with dial-up
accounts. For Windows, I have used a 'shareware' program called
FileSync.

sounds like an oplock problem. Is this setup for multi-user access? I
don't recall what kind of db it uses...does it require a acl on the
server (i.e. paradox). How about the logs (typically
/var/log/samba/log.machine-name or /var/log/samba/smbd.log)
