I am not sure what resolver library you are using. But maybe you have a
nsswitch or hosts.conf or resolv.conf or other that determines what is
used first and also determines what is used as the domain name for short
hostnames (without period).
For example, maybe you have a resolv.conf that has a "domain" or "search"
option that is forcing this.
Then when a lookup is done is forces adding that .localdomain to end and
that is what times out.
