BSDs don't all use GNU grep anymore.
NetBSD now has a free (non-GNU) grep:

OpenBSD has had a freegrep for 9 months:

And FreeBSD is planning to use a freegrep too.
(All part of *BSDs goals to allow reuse of their software in proprietary
products.)
