I don't believe that there is any such thing as a RDP server for
anything but Windows. A free version would be huge news as I'm sure
it's a cash cow for Microsoft (with all the per-client licenses you
need).
VNC is definitely an option as it is standard, easy to setup and use,
has disconnected sessions, and can be used pretty much anywhere.
However, it is also off-the-charts irritating to use for more than a
few minutes if you like graphic rich desktops. The redraws on even a
local network are very noticeable (to me, anyway).
I've been using NoMachine's NX solution lately. It's effectively a
pre-packaged way to use X over SSH filtered through an X-specific
compression proxy. I use it with a graphics rich KDE desktop
(high-color background, anti-aliased text, GUI effects, etc) over a
not-that-fast VPN connection and only rarely do I remember that I'm
working remotely. Those cases are usually when there is text streaming
over a konsole very quickly (read: lots of non-cacheable redraws). In
all normal cases, it works fantastically.
Pros:
1. Secure (uses ssh to tunnel all traffic)
2. Very efficient caching of redraw events
3. Nearly trivial to setup ("wizards" and such through most of it).
4. Base components are Open Source if you want to put everything
together yourself
Cons:
1. No disconnected sessions (yet.. it's a planned feature)
2. Clients for Linux, Windows, and OS X but server only for Linux and
other Unixes.
All in all, I'm a huge fan.
