Subject: Confused on gentoo
Hello out there:

I'm trying to get a bunch of different distros configured on a test machine.
I'm stuck on gentoo. I downloaded the two CD images for version 2003.09.11.
I'm trying to avoid any extra work by doing a "stage 3" install. I've gotten
to the point where I need to select the kernel. The trouble is, although the
instructions say I can install everything from the CD if I do stage 3, the
commands they tell me to enter try to accedss the internet. I can't do that
because gentoo didn't recognize the machine's archaic NIC, and I can't find
the appropriate drivers (8390.o, ne.o) to load to run it. I'm at the point
in the install where you chroot to "/mnt/gentoo" and get the kernel sources
and run "genkernel." But do I really need to compile the kernel if I don't
want to? I know gentoo is designed as a compile-it-yourself distro, but all
I really need is the plain-vanilla installation. So since "emerge -k
gentoo-sources" doesn't work, what can I do instead to get the kernel sources
from the CD?

Thanks,
Vaughn
