If you compile it as i686. That would likely be faster. Theoretically there
shouldn't be a difference in stability or it should improve some as the
improved performance will leave you with more resources available.
The distribution should have kernels compiled for i686, I think. Install a
distro-provided kernel that is optimized for your architecture.
