Look at the /etc/fstab file. Look at the mount and fstab man pages.
Make the mount points read-only (ro).
Also, edit your startup scripts to not remount / as read-write. And modify
your start scripts so they don't modify the motd (or other etc files) at
boot time.
Then use a ram disk for /tmp and maybe consider putting a /var (on your
other hard disk that has your swap partition).
