You probably need to run out of a RAMdisk. I think
www.Knoppix.net has
documentation on this. There also used to be a howto on
www.tldp.org.

No. It's recommended, but Linux will run fine without swap as long as you
don't run out of RAM :).

Do you mean "use scratch files"?
If so, some apps do, but not all. There are configs to turn off these
functions. Knoppix configs have them set.
