I'm not sure what you're asking here. Are you asking for something like
this:

    date    water    elect    phone
    Jan2003 $50.00   $50.00   $50.00


To be collapsed into something like this:

            water    elect    phone
            $50.00   $50.00   $50.00


So you don't see the first column at all, unless you want to "unhide"
it? If so, right-click on the row or column header (the A or 1 thingies)
and choose "Hide". The row or column will disappear completely from the
spreadsheet. The only way to bring it back that I've found is to
right-click on the column border where it used to be and choose "Show".
