You can run the up2date or yast via a systrace mechanism to see what it
does. And the code is available to review.

Ok, I'm curious now. Is a systrace a tool or a technique?
I did an `apt-cache search systrace` and nothing turned up (debian stable).
Should I be looking for an application or what?
Any help is appreciated,
Bart
