What did your boot messages say about it?
Use dmesg or look at /kern/msgbuf.
Maybe a newer NetBSD kernel provides support for it. Or maybe it's not
enabled in kernel config. Or maybe a kernel module could be available. (I
think g4u must be stripped down to fit on floppy.)
I have built many live CDs and boot floppies with NetBSD ...
