Whoever had the original problem can you send me /etc/gdm/gdm.conf from
your system and attach the output file gdm.txt created by issuing

$ dpkg --list |grep gdm > gdm.txt

Also send output file group.txt created by issuing

$ grep gdm /etc/group > group.txt
