somewhere within your smb.conf you should have a line similar to...

        passwd chat = *New*password* %n\n *Retype*new*password* %n\n
*passwd:*all*authentication*tokens*updated*successfully*



one line - no breaks (save for the \ )

also check your /var/log/messages & /var/log/secure &
/var/log/samba/appropriate_machine_log
