I have just recently decided to start looking at Gentoo. The main reason is the
recent gcc improvements and kernel patches to enhance security. PaX,
grsecurity, propolice. For instance propolice is a gcc modification and it only
does any good if your applications are compiled with the -fstack-protector flag.
So with gentoo, you have the option of relatively easily building your entire
system from scratch ... thus deriving full benefit from these new compiler based
dynamic stack protection mechanisms.

The cost is the time spent building the system .... so it really depends on your
needs.

However, I haven't much practical experience with using it so I don't know what
practical limitations exist.
