Alan,
We do this commercially and right now there are really only couple good
options:
A mozilla based solution where calendars are shared on a webdav storage
area and contact info is in LDAP. If you were willing to spend some
money on this I think through carl and the moailla foundation we could
finally get a mysql connector instead of LDAP which would make life a
lot easier.
Upside here is that it is a great mail client with very good spam
filtering and mostly immune to the virus shenanigans. Downside is that
it is a little bit clunky so user training is good, if you can get a
good size thing going then put a bug in carls ear and he may be able to
get your feedback right into the next version, publicity is good. We
could make a case study.
Next option is horde, a php project which is pretty damn good for being
web based. Upside here is that it is GPL php so you can make it do
anything you want. Downside is its web based, though IMAP so you can run
a mail client too.
Many people seem to like suse's open exchange. It isn't completely free
and I don't personally like it but several of our customers have.
If you want to go the horde route let me know, we maintain our own tree
and have a pretty deep understanding. I can also give you a trial
account to feel it out.
Sincerely,
