Indeed I was AND
I wasn't running X already on the local machine
My terminology of client/server wasn't as precise as local/remote and
added to the confusion
My expectations were wrong
AND
xhost +ip_address seemed to matter, I kept putting a space between the +
and ip_address and that didn't seem to work
