Mike - Both Knoppix and Mandrake are good, so pick one and stick with
it.

Is your modem an external serial port model? Than all distros will "see"
it because it is, in fact, a modem. If it is a winmodem, you'll need a
driver after installing the OS. There are drivers for Lucent chip modems
here http://www.heby.de/ltmodem be SURE to get the correct one for your
kernel. I've used both the Debian driver and the Mandrake driver on my
Toshiba with no problems.
