Yep my gentoo knowledge is certainly not up to par :). apt-cache will
give a small description of the package. Usually when searching through
software I use dselect though. It allows you to categorize the package
database, search through it, see full descriptions of software, etc. Hmm
global update? Well 'apt-get update' will update the package database
and from there you can 'apt-get upgrade' or 'apt-get dist-upgrade'...or
better yet 'apt-get dselect-upgrade'.
