ESD off

Okay I keep running into problems with realplayer and various games.
After doing a lot of searching on the web I keep coming to infomation
saying I should disable ARTS or esd. But I don't see where or how to do
that. I'm running gnome on REDHAT 9 so far as I can tell I don't even
have ARTS installed however I think I do have esd up only I don't know
how to turn it off. Any help?
