What was the old password?


If that fails, here's George's handy-dandy mysql root password retrieval
recipe:
shutdown mysql

Then:
# safe_mysqld -Sg &
# mysql mysql
> select Host,User,Password from user;
> update user set Password=password("newpasswd") where User="root";
> exit


Now restart mysql.

It's wonderful being root :)
