Just so that a myth doesn't get started, a Usenet server should not
require "a lot of drive space" unless you attach it to another "public"
Usenet server(1). A personal Usenet server should not take up any more
space than a mail server (they are quite similar), and one may expire
the messages after a certain date if required. Also note that NNTP
does describe a method of authentication to keep non-employees from
connecting (if the IP address is public).
I really like Usenet, so I'm glad to hear the idea still kicks around
in some minds. :-P
(1) Even then, "smart" servers (such as leafnode) may be configured so
that they only pull down groups which people have attempted to read.
If the server seems a little disk-heavy, ask the employees to lay off
alt.binaries.* ;-)
