Thanks to all who responded, especially Ted, Matt, and George. I =
probably will upgrade in the next few days. You're right Ted, how fast =
office applications load is a concern.=20
Meanwhile (red faced) I rebooted, and that solved the problem. I'm =
trying hard to resist the temptation to say we've made Linux TOO MUCH =
like Windows! XP is still noticably faster, but now Linux is fast =
enough to be viable.

I must have had a runaway task and not realized it.
