You might want to also run lilo to get it to point at the newly compiled
kernel as well.

Also, shouldn't there be a 'make install' in there to copy the newly
compiled kernel over to /vmlinuz?

People new to GNU/Linux will also have a problem knowing which options to
enable during the 'make (menu|x)config' step.
