All I can add is that while I was looking at Fry's several of the external
modems said right on the box that they required a windows operating system
in the system requirements listing. There was another guy standing there
who told me he had run into the same problem looking for a modem for Linux.
To me if the box says Windows xxx is required it is a winmodem and will
probably not work with Linux. This was the case for almost all the lower
cost modems. In fact there was only one modem that specifically listed
support for Linux and it was about $70.
