If you're new to Linux and Samba, try starting up Swat. It runs on port
901 and gives you a fairly nice web interface for configuring Samba. Swat
also has a lot of built-in documentation that explains what each option
does. To access Swat from the local system, point your browser to:

http://localhost:901 or http://127.0.0.1:901

or to access from a remote box:

http://1.2.3.4:901 (substitute with the correct IP address for Samba
server)

Login as root and setup your shares. You'll want to use encrypted
passwords, and any accounts you create in Samba should also exist in
/etc/passwd. I set Samba up on a few servers at work and the latest
version 2.2.2 works very nicely.

As far as books go, I bought the O'Reilly Samba book a couple years ago,
but the online documentation is just as good, if not better.
