3.1GHz??? Wow...
Anyway, check /etc/modules.conf to see if there's anything in there that's
related to sound.
You could also turn off Kudzu, although if your sound has already been
configured, then this won't help I suppose. I'm assuming your default
run level is 5, so move /etc/rc5.d/S05kudzu to /etc/rc5.d/K05kudzu.
Other than that, I can't think of anything off hand...
