I've had similar experiences. It never ceases to amaze me how well the
kernel picks up on new hardware and just says "Let's go !". My
girlfriend's dual boot box was a good example. We swapped out one MB
with a Pent. 150 for a new Soyo with a PII 450. Linux just kinda said
"900 bogomips let's rock" and fired right up without any changes at all.
The Winblows(tm) side freaked out, went into safe mode and tried to
install new drivers, one after the other while requiring a reboot each
time. After 10 or 12 reboots, it was just frozen completely and we had
to wipe the Winblows(tm) side of the drive clean and re-install.....
Sooo typical.
