I too have a UMAX (forget which model - but it IS the scsi version) which
works fine under mandrake 7.2 (in fact, it works better under Mandrake
than it did under windows!).

I too suggest SCSI as best choice, but I'm not really up on the
USB support under the most recent versions of Linux - I hear its
gotten MUCH better.

Or an Astra, mine works fine (as I said).

I had (still have ;-) (maybe I ought to offer it for sale ;-) a Kodak
SCSI scanner of some model. It got replaced by the astra when the bulb
burned out - or so the support folks thought. I had to buy a new bulb
for like $45 and stick it in (and it did not work) before they would
replace the scanner. Now, to their credit they shipped me a brand new
scanner while I kept the old one and they paid shipping both ways.

So I'm slightly negatively motivated toward Kodak scanners and slightly
positively motivated toward Astra scanners, as the astra has worked fine
for like over a year (and the kodak died in less than 1 as I recall)
(mostly under windows - I'm working on training my wife to use Linux
at which point it will run only under linux ;-).
