Subject: Trouble sending email
I see many network problems all day long..................I
believe I saw a post earlier today which recommended something like:
'telnet host smtp'
I would only change one thing in the above recommendation in that I would
type in the actual port number: 'telnet host 25'

Telnetting to a port is, in my opinion, a sure fire way
of diagnosing/isolating a problem.

If, for instance, you can telnet to that above port, then I would
suspect a relay problem. If you can't, tail your logs to see if
(and only if) your ipchains/ipf/etc is filtering it out. Telnet
to anonther known port of the same number to eliminate you as the source.

I agree with the fact that they probably ivade your question when you ask
what port they run smtp on (fools for anything other than 25 IMHO), as I catch
myself doing simular responses to my users; at that point I would try a 'nmap'.

Once I am convinced of the fact that the packets are leaving my system, and headed
for I beleive is the standard port (or whatever port they told me) I would not let
up on their end. Call and demand to talk to someone that knows what they are suppose to.

There is no reason why anyone who is running on a non-standard port should not
inform one of the customers as such; IMHO. One of my users could not acces a web page
for a certain vendors site the other day, and after tail'n my ipf logs, I discovered very quickly
that this site (web) was runnin on port 8000. I simply called the guys and asked
why in the H was he running it on such port................He asked his superviser
and they very simply explained that they were not thinking when they set up this service
nd just randoming choose 8000, later learning that some folks (like myself) filter that
range out for streaming audio (et. al).

Meebee I will get hammered by someone in the group about the telnetting to the port
as being ticket to trouble shooting the source...............but is has worked
in 99% of all of my troubles.
