mc is hardly a common *NIX tool. Doubt you'll find it in a default Solaris
or IRIX install.
Didn't know mc could open them, though. Hell, didn't even remember mc is a
file manager until this thread :).[1]
Granted, I'm not certain ar would be on them anymore either :). Also, it
wasn't like I had a whole hell of a lot of luck with ar back when I first
started using debian and tried to do some stuff by hand.
