I strongly recommend that you go to http://www.linuxdoc.org and check out the
"Guides" section. In particular, read the "Installation and Getting Started
Guide" and "The System Administrator's Guide". They may be a bit old, but
they are a good starting place for Linux.

When I started out in Linux back in '95 or so, Matt's "..Getting Started.."
guide was the ONLY method I had to learn Linux/Unix (too poor to afford a
real book). That guide was the reason that I went with Linux and not with
FreeBSD..

BTW, why do you think your CDs are bad?  CDs very rarely go bad so I'd guess 
that something else is going wrong before I'd suspect that.
