RedHat might be a valid choice if you subscribe to the "everybody else
is using it so it must be good" idea. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend
it. SuSE and Mandrake are both better than RedHat in *nearly* every
respect, IMO.
Your friend should avoid Debian and Slackware like the plague. Both
are *great* distros for experienced people, but hell for newbies. I
encounter *way* too many people using Debian as their first distro and
swearing off Linux as a result.
