If you've set up any hosts in the "hosts" table, then you'll (usually) need to
specify the machine name (otherwise it'll assume "localhost" which might
conflict with the host table).

hence try:
mysqladmin -h myHost -u hostname.domainname.com --password 'password'


That's assuming that "hostname.domainname.com" is a user you've setup with the
corresponding password.
