I don't know how they got there, but kdelnk files are the same idea
as shortcuts in Windows... a file which points to another file, and
has metadata about the other file (what icon goes with it, is it
a program, what command-line arguments are needed when starting the
program, etc.) You can do

cat /usr/share/apps/kappfinder/WordProcessing/WordPerfect.kdelnk

to see what's in it, and if it points to some file that isn't there
(most likely xwp, since it appears that is the Wordperfect executable)
then you know why double-clicking on the icon doesn't do anything.
