Thanks all for the replies. I will probably answer my own question eventually. I've installed Ubuntu 6.06 and have been very happy with it so far. Easy to install and use, and lots of packages readily available. I'll try a Debian desktop someday, but it might be a while. (As long as Ubuntu is getting the job done, I won't replace it.) alex
