Easy to determine which card is which. 

Bring a NIC up with a static IP that is valid for your LAN.  
Connect one card to your hub/switch.  
Verify link light is on.  
Ping a computer on the LAN.
If you get a response, you know which card has the IP you assigned - the
one that worked.  Otherwise, it's the other one.

Test #2 - if the NIC has the MAC address printed on it (the newer ones
seem to), Linux assigns eth0 to the lowest MAC address, eth1 to the next
highest, etc.
