It is a new desktop computer I am building out of new parts.
I am not actually at a booting Linux point yet.
The system turns on but I do not get any video output or post beeps.

HI Steven!

You can describe your issue to this list and someone will address it.
We will also need specifics, like distro version, video card/laptop
manufacturer, etc. to assist.

But just as a basic general solution, please follow these simple steps:

1) Boot with various options: (NOMODESET and VGA=XXX)

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 UBUNTU Reference NOMODESET

 Set your framebuffer
resolution to VESA
mode xxx. Check
herefor
a list of possible modes. VGA instructions to change various
resolutions during boot by passing a string to the boot line.

By trial and error you should be eventually able to boot your box if any
possible video driver exists (which it should with any modern linux).

 Still can't figure it out?

2) Change your /etc/inittab to level 3, boot and login, then try to invoke
your X session with "startx" and read the logs.

Still no joy? AND do you have nvidia?

3) Nvidia? Add on the correct drivers:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_readme_install.html

 Still broken?

 4) Document your card/laptop equipment type and distro version and post to
the list.

 Still broken? Can't fix it?

5) Bring to the Linux Security Team Presentation on Saturday at about 6PM
and I will fix it for you.

You can bring your no video problem to the Security Presentation Saturday
at MakerBench:
