Why these mostly empty hidden files?

I'd say they're flash cookies or LSOs.

Debian 6, with the Firefox "BetterPrivacy" plugin configured to delete
DOM and LSOs everytime I close the browser. At first I only had a
settings.sol and a #mail.google.com item in each of those folders - and
the only thing I'd done in Firefox since I had signed on was pull up
gmail. I pulled up a youtube video and that added a #s.ytimg.com.
Closing the browser left me with just the settings.sol file. So they
should be safe to delete, but you'll need a plugin if you want to do it
automatically - the browser won't be aware of them when you delete your
regular cookies.
