x broke (was: computer broke?

I just upgraded the laptop. This is what it does now:
1- start the computer
2- option to enter BIOS appears
2a-if do nothing screen goes black with power to it for about 20 seconds
2b- upon restart it gives you a choice of kernels to start with
2b1-if you choose the 3.1.4 screen goes blank then some text appears
then disappears (upon restart I find most of the text is what
follows)
then more text appears (something about virtual box and stuff that
disappears to quick) then the screen goes blank. Sometimes I have
to go through the process again but sometimes press F1 and text
appears:

cron [OK]

[OK]
*Stopping save kernel messages
[OK]
and followed with the login sequence.
the numbers in the brackets do change each time I see them.
Does this help with fixing X?
