run dpkg -l *firefox* and see if either was installed by the package
manager.  if you run dpkg -L firefox it will show all the files that
belong to that package.

plugins . . . interesting point.  plugins are often tied to a particular
version.  if you are running both versions on the same system you may
experience profile corruption YMMV.

if you have a ~/FF2 that is a full install then you should probably get
rid of it too.
