kubuntu on old laptop

  I personally rate Compaq systems as having the lowest general Linux
compatibility of all major brands.  I had a similar problem with memory on a
Compaq desktop Ubuntu install.  It is surprising that BSD was easier for
you, it may be just a function of your personal familiarity with BSD.  I do
not recommend BSD for general use, its ideal for high-security applications.
