Perhaps you no longer have 3D support in hardware and the system is using CPU
cycles to emulate 3D.

What video card do you have, and what video driver are you using?

Sending us the contents of your /etc/X11/XF86Config or /etc/X11/Xorg.conf file
(whatever you have) may be revealing.

If you have the command "glxinfo", giving us the results of that command would be
a good idea also.
