I have /usr/bin/g++-3.3.  That is in PATH, but it didn't seem to grab 
anything,

Seems like it asked for a number of possible compilers. Why it couldn't 
find and invoke g++, I don't know.  Couldn't find |/*confdefs.h.  */ ???
