Linux and 80GB hdds; how large can hda1 be and still boot off hda2?

I encountered problems with Lilo installing a partition outside the
first 1024 cylinders when installing Mandrake 8.2, so it it not just
older versions of Lilo that are limited in this respect. My problems
were solved when I switched to Grub.
