optical mouse jerky

I have a Memorex optical mouse (ps/2) on my laptop. When I had XP on the laptop, it was flawless. Smooth as silk. Now that I've upgraded my laptop to Lindows 3.0 (Debian Woody), when moving the mouse the motions are jerky. Subtle movements go undetected. I tried some tweaks in the GUI (KDE 3), but that did not solve the problem.
I "think" the problem is that Linux is running the mouse at a lower dpi than XP did.
How do I increase the mouse dots per inch that Linux sees?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
