My current firewall install is a base Debian install with
a couple of "modifications".
The entire installation runs on a 45MB installation.
If I really went to work on it I could get it down to 20MB.
Most of it is man pages, info pages, and HOWTOs that are
leftovers from the early days.

FWIW a firewall should have nothing but
what is required to run.
No compiler.
No RPC services.
No nothing.

If you install anything else it is just one more thing to 
have to remember to turn off or worry about.
